DIA’s history dates back to October 1, 1961, the day the Defense Intelligence Agency was created. This intelligence agency is owned by the Federal government of the United States and is directly authorized by the Department of Defense. The job of this national-level intelligence organization is to provide intelligence support to the nation’s military organizations and other defense policymakers so that the United States can be protected from terrorism. Under the administration of President John F. Kennedy, the agency was established by Mr. Robert McNamara, the eighth Secretary of Defense.
