Job Description And Duties

In accordance with Governor Newsom’s Executive Order N-33-20 and, as a result of the COVID-19 rapid out-break, Caltrans will continue its hiring practices as they are deemed necessary to “maintain continuity of operations of the federal critical infrastructure…,” Candidates who participate in the interview process will be considered essential in promoting this effort and are not in violation of Executive Order N-33-20. Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates equipment identified as Category 1 and Category 2 used by assigned unit, and works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to snow removal and highway maintenance and landscape work Operate snow removal equipment including trucks with plows and or sanders, motor graders, loaders, and rotary snow blowers. Included would be operating and manning chain control and road closures, directing traffic and proper placement of warning / detour signs. Also included would be assisting in all aspects of slide removal (both manual and mechanical). Operate Category 1 & 2 equipment assigned to the Unit. Assignments will include but not be limited to: paving, sign/fence/guardrail repair, culvert cleaning, removing litter, roadside rest other duties that would normally be assigned to a Highway Maintenance Worker or Landscape Maintenance Worker. Duties would include irrigation repair, chemical spraying and Landscape duties. Equipment Care: Person is responsible for servicing, minor adjustments, emergency repairs. Cleaning of equipment and completing all pertinent records of equipment. Special Projects: Work on special projects such as assisting in blasting operations, using rock drills and jackhammers, fabricating tire chains, and setting up emergency traffic controls for accidents and hazardous spills and other duties/incidents as required. Does not supervise but may act as a leadworker. May be required to work overtime due to storms, emergencies, special work projects, or when the Supervisor deems that it is in the best interest of the State to work overtime.

Eligibility for hire is determined by your score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II Exam. You must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Special Requirements

The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
Position requires valid unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver’s License [CDL B], with Tank endorsement [N].
An Audiogram and Medical may be required prior to being hired.

Candidates that believe they meet the minimum qualifications based on a pattern of education from the classification description (specifications) must provide a copy of their degree, transcripts, license, and/or certificate, along with the State application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position.
