Job Description:

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards the Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. We protect and secure Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure and open environment.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Enters and searches latent print evidence in the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and Next Generation Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NGI). Performs the full range of crime scene processing functions at scenes within the United States Capitol Grounds and its extended jurisdiction. Processes scenes associated with person and property crimes to include stolen vehicles, motor vehicle accidents, burglaries, thefts, robberies and assaults. Uses special handling and safety precautions in the collection of weapons, vehicles, chemical agents, narcotics, explosive/pyrotechnics material, hazardous/biohazard materials (to include poisonous, corrosive, and highly combustible materials, blood, body secretions, etc.) in order to minimize risks and reduce the potential of exposure.
  • This position is located in Crime Scene Search, Special Operations Division (SOD), Operational Services Bureau (OSB), Office of the Assistant Chief of Police for Uniformed Operations. OSB provides specialized and emergency response to support the Department’s operational needs. This is accomplished in the form of specialized training, enforcement, coordination, planning, equipment, and response policy development. The Crime Scene Evidence Specialist position is responsible for responding to and assuming control of crime scenes located throughout the Capitol Grounds and its extended jurisdiction in order to photograph, sketch, record, collect, and preserve all items of evidentiary value.
  • Maintains chain of custody; protects and preserves the integrity of evidence to ensure it is not compromised, damaged or altered, ensures that only authorized individuals have access to scenes, evidence and other secure laboratory areas. Locates, develops, preserves, analyzes and compares fingerprints, palm prints, foot prints, footwear, and tire track impressions both at the scene and in the laboratory using photography, powders and chemical processes.

Job Requirements:

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen. You must be a current U.S.C.P. employee. Successful completion of a Background Investigation is required. Must complete a one year probationary period. Must have Direct Deposit. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening test. Shift work is required. Must complete all required training. Must work rotating shifts during training and be available for any shift. Must be willing and able to work nights, weekends and holidays. Must wear a USCP-issued civilian uniform while working in an on-duty status.
  • In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.
  • For CP-08/GS-10: Applicants qualifying for the CP-08/GS-10 level includes one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least CP-07/GS-09 level. Specialized experience consists of: 1) Coordinating evidence disposal, including hazardous/biohazards evidence, with USCP leadership.; 2) Performing field testing and preliminary laboratory analysis: 3) Recording fingerprints and palm prints and collecting DNA; and 4) Using special handling and safety precautions in handling of weapons, etc.
