Job Description:

Under direction, this non-sworn management position directs, manages, and oversees the day-to-day administration and supervision of the Fire Prevention Bureau, including Fire Prevention, Environmental Management, Vegetation Management, Fire Engineering and the City’s Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA).

Job Responsibilities:

  •  Oversees Fire Prevention Bureau inspections including new construction and annual inspection of state regulated occupancies.
  • Oversees fire prevention inspections, code enforcement, fire engineering and the City’s Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) within the
  • Environmental Management Center.
  • Manages the Environmental Management Center and enforces all elements of the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) for the City of Glendale.
  • Prepares and presents detailed technical reports for complicated and high profile fire prevention topics as well as staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  • Assists in the preparation of the budgets of the Fire Prevention Bureau, monitors and approves the expenditure of funds, and develops fee resolutions and ordinances.
  • Provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief and/or his designee.
  • Responds to major firefighting and hazardous material emergencies to assist Fire Command staff, as assigned and to control fire and life safety systems or initiate fire cause and origin investigations, as required.
  • Interprets Federal, State and local rules, regulations and codes for code enforcement and recommends needed changes and revisions to codes and ordinances. Conducts and oversees plan review and inspections to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures and guidelines related to Fire Prevention, Environmental Management, Vegetation Management, Fire Engineering and the City’s Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA).
  • Reviews and evaluates employee’s job performance, recommends appropriate personnel action, and assists with employee development.
  • Ensures Department services are provided with the highest customer service and ethical standards.
  • Oversees code development and code adoption.

  • Perform complex plan review.
  • Effectively work with the Fire Department Management Team.
  • Organize, assign and schedule workload among employees.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in fire protection administration, fire protection engineering, forestry or a related field.
  • Graduate degree in public administration, business administration, fire protection or a related field is desirable.
  • Ten years of professional experience in fire prevention, environmental management, vegetation management, fire engineering, building and safety or related program, five of which must be at a supervisory level with a government agency.
  • Must possess some experience with Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA).
