Job Description:

A tool box, complete master tool set, specialty tools and uniforms are provided. Selected applicant must have telephone or message number where applicant may be reached and pass a background investigation, physical examination, and drug screen.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Under limited supervision, supervises skilled Heavy Truck and EVT maintenance and repair technicians; instructs employees in correct methods and procedures; trains employees in safe operation of emergency vehicles, fire apparatus and equipment; other heavy equipment and EVT service truck; monitors and inspects work in progress to ensure safety, quality, and timely completion of work; reviews and evaluates employee performance.
  • Participates in the maintenance and repair of emergency vehicles, fire apparatus and equipment and other heavy equipment.
  • Oversees the proper use, cleanliness and storage of tools and specialty equipment; ensures equipment and vehicles are in proper working order and are maintained on a periodic basis; notifies supervisor of major equipment and work problems.
  • Ensures workers maintain awareness of others within the work area, maintain a clean and safe work area, follow safety rules and safe work practices, and use safety equipment where required. Maintains appropriate maintenance and repair records, inventory of parts, log of work completed and time, parts and materials used, injury reports, and related reports including required regulatory reports.
  • Responds to operator complaints; investigates nature of complaints and takes necessary action.
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment in the performance of duties.
  • Schedules and approves maintenance repairs of emergency vehicles, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hydraulic equipment and other specialized heavy equipment. Approves or denies parts request from operators and mechanics.
  • Oversees, directs and trains a staff of one skilled mechanic with proper procedures and techniques of emergency vehicles, fire apparatus and equipment. Manages and assigns vehicle repair orders.
  • May attend meetings and seminars to upgrade knowledge in area of specialization. May order supplies and equipment up to a predetermined amount; makes telephone calls to get price quote and purchases best quality for lowest price. Operates wrecker to tow in disabled vehicle.
  • May serve as Supervisor in his/her absence. Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of emergency vehicle and fire apparatus operation and repair principles, methodologies and techniques.
  • Tools, equipment, materials used in diagnosis, repair, maintenance and inspection of emergency vehicles, fire apparatus, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of heavy truck operation and repair principles, methodologies, and techniques.
  • Emissions and inspection standards. Occupational hazards and safety practices and regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and data entry. Supervisory methods and techniques to include metrics for measuring performance.

Job Qualification:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of heavy duty truck experience including diesel engine diagnostic and repair of hydraulic, electrical and brake systems.
  • Three years of maintenance and repair of fire apparatus and one year of supervisory experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
