Job Description:

As the Nursery and Greenhouse Manager, you will be responsible for a state-of-the-art greenhouse facility to produce plants that will enhance the City of Raleigh for years to come. You will oversee the care of annual and perennial plants, shrubs, and trees; hire and coordinate nursery and greenhouse workers including volunteers; and observe environmental standards for agricultural and horticultural production for the City of Raleigh. This dynamic and active position relies on your talents and skills to shape the future of Raleigh parks and greenways through plant propagation and production.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist Horticulturist with plant selection and quantities needed for propagation and production of greenhouse/nursery stock.
  • Carries out a yearly maintenance plan for all systems inside the greenhouse and nursery area to include documentation, preventative maintenance, writing service requests and careful monitoring of all equipment.
  • Directs two part-time technicians to operate greenhouse and nursery production.
  • Develops and implements an effective IPM program that monitors and treats for insects, diseases, weeds, and other pests.
  • Responsible for all aspects of propagation, including propagation from seed, cuttings, and divisions.
  • Manages the greenhouse and nursery facility for City of Raleigh Parks Maintenance Division.
  • Maintains a sanitary growing environment and overall health of all plant material in the greenhouse and nursery.
  • Responsible for growing perennials, small shrubs, tropicals and other display plants, vegetables, and herbs for the Mordecai historic plant sale, and two crops of seasonal annuals.
