Job Description:

The Director of the System Operations Center serves as a key member of the senior management and leadership team of Seattle City Light. In this capacity, supports and sustains Seattle City Light as a high performing organization by contributing to excellent organizational performance and customer service. The position contributes to the vision, mission, and values of Seattle City Light through responsible and effective work performance. Job Responsibilities:

  • Formulates policy and program recommendations which support and enhance city-wide goals and objectives and provides for the appropriate allocation of resources.
  • Provides oversight and direction for multiple operating unit budgets to ensure resources are efficiently and effectively utilized. Ensures comprehensive work plans support the budget.
  • Represents the System Operations interests in new technology initiatives. In some cases acting as an executive sponsor, steering committee member, or stakeholder. Also acts as a proactive, solution driven leader incorporating new technologies and programs into System Operations policies and procedures
  • Manages and directs 24×7 operations to ensure interconnected system operations do not jeopardize public safety or contribute to a sub-regional blackout. Responsible for ensuring energy assets of the utility are operated reliably to support customer service goals.
  • Provides oversight of all activities associated with the System Operations Center. These activities include real-time operations of Seattle City Light’s power system (generation, transmission and distribution).
  • Provides oversight for Transmission, Distribution, and Generation Dispatchers to ensure an adequate supply of electricity flows to the grid without service disruption. Ensures Power Dispatchers have proper training and tools to make real time decisions regarding SCL and regional grid operations, including the Western Energy Imbalance Market.
  • Represents Seattle City Light and public power interests on national and regional industry organizations such as NERC, WECC and the NWPP. Actively participates on boards and special committee assignments.

Job Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of the Energy Management System is required on multiple levels. In order to specify modifications, knowledge at the detailed system is required so the modifications fit within the capabilities of the system.
  • This allows cost efficient modifications. In order to model, study, and analyze the power system a detailed knowledge of the advanced EMS applications is necessary.

Job Qualification:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, economics, business administration or related field is required.
  • Substantial management and leadership experience in electrical engineering or related area of responsibility typically gained through 10 or more years progressively responsible assignments; at least 5 of which were as a manager or supervisor in a large, complex, multicultural and diverse organization.
