Job Description:

As a Senior Safety Specialist, you will work to improve the overall safety culture and ensure compliance by implementing and maintaining National Grid’s safety programs. You will work closely with field personnel and develop positive professional relationships with all levels of management, represented employees, and contractors during all phases of operation. This is a field position encompassing worksites throughout the assigned area and will require daily travel to work sites. This position supports our electric and gas business with primary focus on electric in Albany, NY.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate or lead Risk Assessment or Job Hazard Analysis teams
  • Inspect new processes, materials, tools, substances, and equipment to identify hazards before an issue occurs
  • Post safety communications in various locations as needed
  • Communicates safety and health information at employee meetings and safety committees
  • Act as subject matter expert for large project pre-job review, walk-through, planning
  • Review contractor Health and Safety Plans and suggest improvements before project kickoff
  • Develop positive, professional relationships with field personnel, all levels of leadership, outside agencies and the public
  • Investigate incidents, injuries, damage to property or other safety related concerns
  • Back up other Safety Reps and fill in for other employees who are out on vacation or leave, or in other situations where an onsite safety presence is prudent
  • Cultivate safety and health skills and knowledge of frontline workers
  • Conduct Second Level Assurance Reviews

Job Requirements:

  • Strong skills with organization, communication, and attention to detail
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Psychology, or related subject.
  • Negotiation skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • CSP, ASP, GSP, IH Certification or on path toward achieving
  • Computer proficiency is essential
  • Travel is required
  • At least 6 years of progressive experience in a role where managing safety/health programs was 90% of job responsibility/accountability
  • Strong influencing skills required
  • Have a thorough knowledge of all related OSHA regulations, DOT regulations, applicable ANSI standards, RMI guidelines
  • Must be self-starter with strong work ethic and ability to set and follow a daily/weekly schedule
  • Public speaking, training, and presentation skills
