Job Description:

The NC Department of Public Safety continuously recruits for Substance Abuse Workers and will accept applications regardless of whether there is a current vacancy.  Your application for this posting will remain on file for 180 days and will be screened for vacancies as they occur.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Administering medications provided by the medical staff.
  • Monitoring resident behavior and activities.
  • Transporting clients from across the state to this facility. This may occur at any hour of the day or night while on duty.
  • Developing effective working relationships with coworkers and other professionals involved in treating substance use disorders.
  • Providing basic substance abuse information services.
  • Loading and unloading facility supplies, as needed.
  • Setting up, cleaning up, and maintaining the food service and equipment areas.
  • Monitoring the security of buildings, grounds, and vehicles.
  • Applying intervention techniques when needed.
  • Documenting all incidents and medical emergencies.
  • Thoroughly understanding the security and emergency procedures of the facility.
  • Completing shift reports.

Job Requirements:

  • Work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
  • Be available to work any shift (3rd, 2nd, and 1st) to staff the 24/7 operation of these facilities. Typically, candidates are assigned to 2nd or 3rd shift but may temporarily work other shifts (e.g. if another employee is on vacation) or may be permanently assigned to another shift due to operational needs.
  • Employees work 10-hour shifts for 4 days a week.
  • Transport probationers or parolees in departmental vehicles at any time during the night or day while on duty.
  • This may require driving in different types of weather, traffic, or road conditions.
  • Accommodate modifications to work schedules including hold-over or schedule changes on short notice to provide critical operational needs.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license with no driving restrictions.
