Job Description:

Develops plans and specifications, performs analysis, and provides reports on assigned tasks involving design and construction of new facilities or operation and maintenance of existing facilities. Technically involved in the resolution of equipment and operational problems that may include performing field investigation or inspections, performing design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Represents the Company interests and develops influence within the industry by participating in standards development, regulatory, and manufacturer working groups
  • Supports protection and control equipment acceptance testing by developing specifications and reviewing test results
  • Develops technical procedures and guidelines used by Substation Operations, Power Equipment Service Center, and contractors
  • Support the operation of protection and control equipment by providing on-site and remote support to field personnel during routine maintenance, troubleshooting and equipment repairs, and conducting root cause analysis of failed in service equipment and misoperations.
  • Plans, prioritizes, conducts and leads assignments.
  • Creates and updates engineering standards, policies, guidelines and ensures procedures are in place for compliance with these policies.
  • May communicate with regulatory bodies and government agencies.
  • Supports NERC compliance efforts related to substation and protective relay commissioning and maintenance
  • Supports the installation and development of new substation technologies and equipment
  • Supports protection and control equipment commissioning by developing commissioning plans and procedures, equipment test plans,
  • providing technical support during construction, and reviewing test results performed by contractors.
  • Support protection and control maintenance by developing protection and control maintenance and testing requirements and procedures and providing guidance on testing intervals
  • Serves as project or case manager in the development, facilitation, and implementation of metrics, processes and procedures.
  • Acts as a resource for members with less experience, may direct the technical complexities of work.
  • Ensures the safe operation of substation equipment by acting as the subject matter expert to interpret protection and control equipment test results and recommending corrective action
  • Works with equipment manufacturers and engineering design groups to identify issues and develop technical solutions related to equipment failures and misoperations

  • In depth knowledge and experience in multiple engineering initiatives.
  • Ability to work within stringent deadlines.
  • Knowledge of applicable NERC, CIP, and other regulatory standards
  • Experience developing substation commissioning plans and test procedures, providing equipment isolation support, and performing in-service load checks

Qualification & Experience:

  • Experience in the design and development of protection and controls systems and protective relay settings
  • Experience with the commissioning and maintenance of protection and controls equipment (electromechanical relays, digital relays, powerline carrier, communication-based protection schemes, breaker failure, etc.)
  • Experience with the testing and calibration of electromechanical relays and powerline carrier equipment.
  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of substation equipment
  • Experience with dynamic and end to end testing of protective relay schemes
  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering and a PE certification combined with Six (6) years directly related experience as an Engineer.
