Job Description:

The Texas Bar Books department publishes law books and manuals in traditional print, electronic, and online formats. This position assists with editing and production of publications in all formats. Responsible for editing, proofreading, indexing, and various production tasks as well as supervision of technical production staff on certain tasks or projects. Works under the general supervision of the Senior Editor. Involves contact with other departments of the State Bar as well as individuals and organizations, including printers and other vendors, outside the Bar.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Writes specifications for bids; analyzes bids; communicates with printers and other vendors.
  • Edits attorney-drafted manuscripts for grammar, style, and organization; ensures correct citation style for legal authorities; proofreads corrections.
    Researches and compiles bibliographies and indexes.
  • Proofs and approves PDF printouts and printer’s proofs.
  • Gives input to departmental marketing coordinator as needed, including proofing and assisting with preparation of ads, promotional materials, and entries of all Texas
  • Bar Books publications on department website. Edits all material for website publication.
  • Edits and reviews electronic products, including on-screen proofing/marking of text, graphics, and media content, working with production staff and web publishing team on all versions of electronic products including online product editing and formatting.
  • Confers with staff attorneys regarding projects and with other editors and production staff to maintain production schedules.
  • Performs administrative duties, including obtaining Library of Congress control numbers, assigning ISBNs to publications, and submitting information to national indexing services.
  • Organizes and submits publications to State Bar archives.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or related field and at least two years’ relevant editorial experience required.
  • Knowledge of proofreader’s marks and advanced skills in writing, editing, and proofreading required. Knowledge of contemporary rules for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and proper word use required.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Internet browsers required.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects required.
  • Familiarity with electronic publishing, graphics, web design, and multimedia production preferred. Some experience in a printing/publishing environment preferred.

Qualification & Experience:

  • 1 year experience performing data entry.
