Job Description:
The Fire Engineer/Operator performs technical work in firefighting, apparatus operations, emergency rescue, EMS and fire training activities. The Fire Engineer/Operator usually performs work on an assigned basis under the direction of the Fire Officer. Incumbents may perform duties similar to those of a Fire Officer, in the absence of the Fire Officer. It is important to realize that the Fire Engineer/Operator could either be performing these duties under the direction of the Fire Officer or could be the step-up supervisor responsible for carrying out those duties.
Job Responsibilities:
- Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; identify resource needs; discuss with appropriate management staff; implement improvements.
- Participate in school visits and public education.
- Lead the cleaning, maintenance and upkeep of buildings, grounds, apparatus and equipment; maintain service records on all department vehicles; maintain equipment inventory.
- Assist the Fire Officer with company work activities and projects; monitors workflow assigned to them.
- Train, motivate and evaluate company personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees and reserves to correct deficiencies; prepare training records and enter completed forms in the record management system as directed by the Fire Officer.
- Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the department.
- Be aware of safety for you and your crew members at all times.
- Conduct station maintenance, training, responding to emergencies and participate in firefighting, rescue, hazardous material, or medical calls until relieved by a Fire Officer or his assigned designee.
- Maintain a high quality of customer service with the citizens and public.
Job Requirements:
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
- Modern and complex principles and practices of fire suppression and fire prevention.
- Operation, maintenance, and use of firefighting, rescue and EMS equipment.
- Fire prevention policies, rules, regulations, Fire SOP’s and Medical SOP’s
- Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
- Local geography including location of mains, hydrants, and major fire hazards.
- Operational characteristics, services and activities of a fire suppression program.
- Have knowledge of County resources, such as equipment, staffing, water supply, communications, and mutual aid agreements.
