Job Description:

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Law Enforcement Division is the first line of defense in protecting the integrity of credentials issued by DMV to the public through enforcement of laws and regulations specific to motor vehicle titling and driver licensing. The division takes the lead in investigating driver license and title fraud, odometer fraud, misuse of dealer plates and temporary tags, curbstoning, sales and use tax evasion, and motor vehicle theft. The division is also responsible for safeguarding Virginia’s transportation infrastructure through enforcement and compliance of laws pertaining to commercial transportation, motor fuels tax, and the automobile salvage industry.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to successfully pass an extensive background check.
  • Skilled at reading, interpreting, explaining and applying laws and procedures.
  • Must possess a High School or GED diploma.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team member.
  • Considerable knowledge of the motor vehicle, tax, and criminal laws of the Commonwealth and their application.
  • Must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law as well as in any other forum required by job responsibilities.
  • Experience conducting complex investigations from beginning to successful conclusion.
  • Knowledge of the collection, preservation, and presentation of evidence.
  • Experience performing intricate analysis and reconstruction of records/data flow/supply chain transactions.
  • Knowledge of investigative principles and techniques, laws of arrest, rules of evidence, and search and seizure.
  • Experience writing investigative reports that are thorough and able to present information in a professional manner based on the evidence.
  • Must have current VA DCJS Basic Law Enforcement certification.
  • Skilled at using Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in the normal course of business;
  • Experience working independently with minimal supervision.
